Did you know that a significant part of the civil war was fought in Tennessee? Only Virginia saw more battles on its soil. Tennessee’s many rivers were important transportation routes into the South, and the Union armies sought to control these waterways. One key battle occurred at Parker’s Crossroads in West Tennessee on December 31, 1862, when the Union army attempted to block the Confederate withdrawal across the Tennessee River.
Today, Parker’s Crossroads is a preserved battlefield site with self-guided walking tours, a learning center, and a gift shop with educational material about the civil war.
